Impaired kidney function contributes significantly to cardiovascular deaths, accounting for approximately 12% of such cases worldwide. Additionally, CKD is now the 12th leading cause of disability-related health loss, impacting daily functioning and long-term quality of life.
High blood sugar, high blood pressure, and elevated body mass index are the most consistent risk factors for CKD. This highlights the importance of lifestyle modifications and early intervention to prevent and manage the disease.
However, there are significant treatment access gaps worldwide, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and Latin America. Basic urine testing, which could aid in early detection, is underutilized in several regions. Dr. Morgan Grams, co-lead author of the study, explains, "CKD is underdiagnosed and undertreated." She adds that while new medications released in the last five years can slow disease progression and reduce heart complications, it will take time for their impact to be reflected in global data.
The study's findings make it clear that CKD is expanding at a rate that outpaces the response of healthcare systems.
